Sustainability and responsibility

Welcome to explore UniSport's sustainability efforts, where ecological, social, and economic responsibility are at the forefront on the journey towards a sustainable and equitable future.

Sustainability is comprehensively understood at UniSport; the implementation plan states that in addition to promoting ecological sustainability, UniSport is committed to promoting social and economic sustainability, implementing equality and equity, and adopting responsible employer policies in all its activities.

UniSport drafted its sustainability and responsibility plan in spring 2023, and some of the measures are already part of our daily operations. UniSport's sustainability and responsibility plan follows the principles of responsibility and sustainability programs of all owner universities.

Examples of key actions

Socially and economically sustainable development

  • Promotion of Diversity: Our written and visual communications promote diversity and non-discrimination.
  • We ensure equal treatment for our multilingual customers by communicating in both Finnish and English.
  • We also enhance our permanent communication offerings in the second national language.
  • We have established guidelines for creating a safer space.
  • Support for Cycling: We support commuting by bicycle by providing shower facilities in all our centers.
  • Equality and Non-Discrimination Plan: UniSport adheres to its own equality and non-discrimination plan to ensure the well-being of its staff and equal and non-discriminatory treatment.

Ecologically sustainable development

  • Energy usage: We aim to reduce energy consumption in our facilities by turning off lights when they are not needed, adjusting sauna opening hours, and using motion sensor-operated lighting and showers.
  • Zero Waste Goal: We strive for a zero-waste environment where waste is minimized. We recycle and develop recycling opportunities as much as possible. For instance, we donate unclaimed lost items to those in need and donate unused equipment to the Development Cooperation in Sports organization.
  •  We ensure the longevity of sports equipment through regular maintenance.
  • Eco-Friendly Products: We pay attention to the ecological aspects, domestic production, and recyclability of the products we sell.
  • Circular Economy: We encourage circular economy practices and consumption reduction by renting and borrowing sports equipment.

Guidelines of safer space at UniSport

The purpose of these guidelines is to prevent inappropriate behaviour such as harassment, bullying and discrimination in university sports and to help us intervene in this kind of behavior. We can create an equal and community-focused atmosphere in university sports by taking other people into consideration in a respectful way.

The guidelines are based on the Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL) Safer space guidelines for university sports.

We let everyone train in peace.

  • We use respectful language. We only give comments on the performance of others if asked.
  • Other people’s bodies are none of our business. We don’t touch others without permission or comment on other people’s bodies or appearance.
  • We pay attention to other customers when we film and record. We are also respectful on social media.

We treat each other equally.

  • We cannot know someone’s experiences, thoughts, life situation, sexuality, gender, nationality, culture, language, religion, values, health status or functional ability based on their appearance, manner of speaking or other behavior.
  • We give everyone an equal chance to participate.

We learn from our mistakes.

  • We take responsibility for our mistakes and change our way of operating if needed.

We do not tolerate inappropriate behavior.

  • If we notice discrimination, harassment, or other inappropriate behavior, we will intervene.
  • If you experience inappropriate behavior, please contact UniSport staff or make a report about inappropriate behaviour using this form. All contacts will be handled confidentially.
